PLANNING A VISIT

A way to know it better is spending there your holidays and you can be sure that you will not regret it!

Brittany can satisfy each taste: for naturalists (sea, islands, forests, natural parks, birds preserve), for intellectuals and history, archaeology, painting fans (museums, pre-historic monuments and excavations, exhibitions); for sportsmen (swimming, walking and cycling tours, windsurfing, kayak); for celtic  music and dancing fans (Interceltique Festival of Lorient, fest-noz = folk village feast. Therefore there is no time to be bored. Remember anyway to include in your equipment heavy and waterproof clothes.....the rain it's typical  in Brittany too.

An hypothetical itinerary for visiting Brittany could start from the north with Saint Malo and its islands, Dinan, Dinard and going on to the west along the rose granite coast (a very special landscape in Europe). Then cutting the region from north-est to south-west you could reach Brest but do not forget to explore before the Monts d'Arrée, the most ancient mountains of Brittany. Arriving in Brest you will see Oceanopolis recommended especially for children and naturalists.

Oceanopolis
Oceanopolis, the oceanic research centre in Brest (Brest - 29 Finistere)

Leaving Brest directed to the south the Point du Raz should not be lost as it offers wondeful views and landscapes especially when the ocean is enraged. This part of brittany is called Cornouaille. The visit continues to the west and you will meet the following towns Quimper, Concarneau, Pont-Aven, Lorient. At this point of the journey you will approach my homeland and believe me when I say to you that here you will find the best landscapes and the most ancient monuments of Brittany.

Coming from the west first you have to cover the penisula of Quiberon  along the west coast called Cote Sauvage (enchanting rocky coast). Once arrived in Quiberon you have to turn back to reach Carnac to discover the several megalithic alignements (menhirs), dolmen and tumulus. If you have time visit also Belle-Ile, the biggest island of Brittany, and the Gulf of Morbihan by boat. Bicicles are recommended to move quickly on the Gulf islands. And of course Auray, one of the most ancient town of Brittany, where I was born too.

HISTORY

Brittany was annexed to France in 1532 and its past is extremely interesting and rich from the beginning when the megalithic people in 6° Century B.C.  built the famous dolmens, menhirs and tumulus. Then the Celts arrived here with their culture.

The most significant historical personages of Brittany are Bertrand Du Guesclin (war-man),  Anne de Bretagne (Duchess of Brittany and then Queen of France, determinant for the annexion of Brittany to France),  Jacques Cartier (navigator and explorer of St. Malo),   Surcouf and Duguay-Trouin (renowned corsairs of St.Malo ), Cadoudal (breton revolutionary, nay of Auray), René Laennec (renowned doctor of Quimper).
